The Department of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran is one of the oldest International Relations Study Programs in Indonesia. The Department of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran was established on November 13, 1965, based on the Decree of the Dean of the Faculty of Social Politics, Universitas Padjadjaran No. 014/Kep/Sospol/65. The first Head of the Department of International Relations Unpad was F. Isjwara S.H., L.L.M. 

The structure of Departement of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran is under the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP). FISIP was founded on October 13, 1958, by the Rector of Padjadjaran University through Decree No. 4/PKUP/1958, dated February 28, 1958.

The Department of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran operates 3 study programs: Bachelor of International Relations, Master of International Relations, and Doctor of International Relations. The Doctorate Study Program was founded in 2010 and it is the first and only Doctorate study program of International Relations in Indonesia. Since 2023, The Department of International Relations Universitas Padjadjaran has been operating The International Undergraduate Program (IUP) which all courses are full carried out in English and offers international programs.

The Department of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran is one of the most popular study programs in Indonesia, as proofed by the high number of registrants in this program. In the 2023 student admission selection, the level of rigor is 1:610 The Department of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran has high academic standards and strict requirements for selecting student admissions. The Department of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran is located on two campuses, namely: Jatinangor Campus, Sumedang, and Dago Campus, Bandung, which are easy to access.

Some of the excellences of The Department of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran:
  1. It is categorized as State University with Legal Status (PTNBH)
  2. Achieve “excellent” accreditation with an Outcome Based Education (OBE) and hybrid learning-oriented curriculum.
  3. Providing internship opportunities at various Indonesian Embassies and the opportunity to study for 1-2 semesters at well-known universities at home and abroad.
  4. The location of the campus is in an educational area with standard state campus tuition fees.
  5. Large student capacity of more than 100 students/year but with an ideal ratio.
  6. The lecturers are professors and doctors from respected domestic and abroad universities
  7. It has strong alumni network spreads both domestically and abroad who are members of an organization called International Relations Alumni Association, Universitas Padjadjaran (IKAHI).

The Department of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran academic community collaborates with various universities abroad, including by inviting visiting lecturers from the University of Zululand, South Africa; University of Tehran, Iran; University of Utara Malaysia; RSIS Singapore; Mindanao State University, Philippines; Seoul National University, Republic of Korea.

The Department of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran develops activities in 6 scientific clusters: Global Governance, Global Politics, Global Security Studies, Global Political Economy, Foreign Policy and Diplomacy, Cultural and Globalization Studies. The Department of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran also focuses on Area Studies, especially in Asia (Southeast Asia, Asia-Pacific, and East Asia), Africa and the Middle East, and Europe and America.

Since 2020, the research focus of the The Department of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran has included Global Security, Global Digital Economy, Global Political Islam, ASEAN Studies, and Paradiplomacy with partners from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Communication and Information, the Office of Vice President, Indonesian Coast Guard, Rajaratnam School of International Studies Singapore, Japan International Transport and Tourism Institute, West Java Provincial Government.

In the future, The Department of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran will develop studies in the area of:

  1. Peace Building and Conflict Reconciliation in Southeast Asia, especially in Myanmar, Southern Thailand, and Southern Philippines.
  2. Climate change with a focus on changing people’s behavior and finding commodities that can reduce carbon levels, such as seaweed.
  3. Food Security.

Community Service of The Department of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran focuses on empowering people to face global changes. Among the activities carried out by The Department of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran are sending our lecturers to be speakers in international forums, including resource person in the Office of Vice President’s Focus Group Discussion regarding the 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship, Digital Economy Working Group G20, 3rd Tehran Dialogue Forum (Iran, 2022); Palestine’s International Prize for Literature (Lebanon, 2022); Conference of The Global Gathering in Support of the Choice of Resistance (Lebanon, 2023); EU-ASEAN at 45 (Malaysia, 2023). In the future, the Community Service of The Department of International Relations, Universitas Padjadjaran will develop activities towards Village Digitalization located in Bagolo Village and Cijulang Village, Pangandaran.
